The monument features an imposing cylindrical structure topped with a panoramic terrace that offers breathtaking views of the city, including St. Peter’s Basilica. The name “Sant’Angelo” originates from the legend of the Archangel Michael, who is said to have appeared atop the mausoleum in 590 AD to announce the end of a plague in Rome.
Inside, the castle boasts a network of corridors, ornately decorated rooms, and the famous Passetto di Borgo, a secret passage connecting the castle to the Vatican. The museum houses frescoes, ancient weapons, and historical artifacts that recount the building’s rich and complex history.
Castel Sant’Angelo is a place where art, history, and legend intertwine, offering visitors a unique experience in the heart of Rome.
